Working for behaviour change with consistently challenging children can be hard going. There is a lot of uncertainty but also much to hope for. Most OSCAR services can talk about positive outcomes they have seen and we need to keep in mind the real potential for children to grow and change within our programmes.

If we are putting in place some planned behaviour support for a child, feedback from TKK suggests that we should keep some simple documentation of this.

Ultimately, the child and their whānau are entitled to a fair process. Ideally any decision to exclude a child should not come ‘out of the blue’. While parents (and staff) maybe be upset or disappointed, the reasons should be understood, even if not agreed with. This forum will discuss what ‘a fair process’ looks like, starting from a documented behaviour support plan, through to the steps where a child is to be excluded.
